At its yearly budget workshop, preparing for the 2024-25 fiscal year, the Harrison County Fiscal Court met in the Community Room at the Courthouse on March 19.
The court okayed 27 different requests for funding from local nonprofit groups or organizations totaling $617,250, slightly above the $616,000 that was granted last fiscal year.
Far and away the largest appropriation the court okayed was the $325,000 paid to Harrison Memorial Hospital, as a part of the three-year purchase agreement for the local ambulance service. The fiscal court has one more year to pay that amount to HMH to satisfy the purchase agreement that was entered into in 2022.
The Cynthiana-Harrison County-Berry Joint Planning Commission requested $110,000 from the fiscal court, up from the $99,000 that was granted for fiscal year 2023-24. The planning commission cited on-going legal fees as a reason for the requested increase.
The court agreed to put into its budget the $11,000 difference, but it will be used only if those legal fees continue to rise.
The court implemented a similar strategy for the $9,000 request made by the Harrison County Sanitation District. Instead of granting that request, the court agreed to set aside $9,000 for use by the sanitation district, if and when they need the funds.
“Instead of paying those two up front, I recommend that we put those requests in the budget and if those funds are needed, we can help them out,” said County Treasurer Melody McClure.
